Grand Canyon — South Rim Vista

This is a second South Rim vista of Grand Canyon National Park, offering a different angle on the immense gorge the Colorado River has cut through northern Arizona. Each rim viewpoint frames a distinct set of temples and buttes — the named rock formations that rise from the canyon floor — so the two South Rim cameras together capture how dramatically the scene changes with viewing angle and light. As with the rest of the canyon, the magic is in the light. Sunrise and sunset transform the layered limestone, sandstone, and shale into bands of fire, while passing clouds throw moving shadows across formations miles away. Clear winter days, sometimes with snow dusting the rim, can produce the sharpest long-range visibility of the year. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round, three hours ahead of Hawaii. The South Rim sits at about 7,000 feet, high enough for ponderosa pine forest and cold, snowy winters despite the desert below. Beyond the overlooks, the park protects a remarkable range of life from rim to river, including the endangered California condor — North America's largest land bird — which was reintroduced here and is now regularly seen soaring on the canyon's thermals.
