Frequently Asked Questions

Is this weather dashboard free to use? +

Yes — all 12 data sources are completely free with no account or sign-up required. Data comes directly from NOAA, the National Weather Service, USGS, EPA, and other official government sources. Port of Cams aggregates them into a single dashboard.

How often does the NOAA weather radar update? +

The NWS radar mosaic updates every 2–6 minutes under normal conditions. During severe weather events, NEXRAD Doppler radar can update as frequently as every 60 seconds in Volume Coverage Pattern (VCP) 212 mode. The interactive radar tab loads directly from radar.weather.gov.

How many weather forecast models does the dashboard compare? +

The Forecast tab compares 7 models with 48-hour charts and a 10-day comparison table: NWS (official US forecast), GFS (NOAA global model), ECMWF (European model, widely considered the most accurate global model), ICON (German weather service), GEM (Canada), JMA (Japan), and HRRR (high-resolution US rapid-refresh). Enter any zip code to load your area.

What is vog and why does it affect Hawaii air quality? +

Vog (volcanic fog) is air pollution caused by sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and other gases emitted from Kilauea volcano on Hawaii Island. During Kona wind conditions — when trade winds weaken and winds reverse from the southwest — vog can spread across all Hawaiian islands, aggravating respiratory conditions and reducing visibility. The Vog tab shows live EPA AirNow data zoomed to Hawaii plus links to USGS SO₂ emission updates.

How often do NOAA ocean buoy readings update? +

NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoys report wave height, dominant period, water temperature, wind speed, and air pressure every 30 minutes to 1 hour. This dashboard shows data from over 1,900 active NDBC stations plotted on an interactive map — click any buoy for full readings. The PacIOOS tab adds 13 dedicated Hawaii wave buoys covering Waikiki, Waimea Bay, Hanalei, and more.

What is a METAR report? +

METAR (Meteorological Aerodrome Report) is the international standard format for reporting current weather at airports. Pilots use METAR data to determine flight categories: VFR (Visual Flight Rules, good visibility), MVFR (Marginal VFR), IFR (Instrument Flight Rules, low visibility), or LIFR (Low IFR). The Aviation tab decodes raw METAR strings into readable temperature, dewpoint, wind, visibility, and altimeter data.

Does the dashboard show tide predictions for Hawaii and Alaska? +

Yes. The Tides tab shows NOAA CO-OPS high and low tide predictions for 15 stations: Hawaii — Honolulu, Kahului (Maui), Hilo, Nawiliwili (Kauai). Alaska — Anchorage, Juneau, Sitka, Valdez, Ketchikan, Homer. West Coast — San Francisco, Los Angeles. East Coast — New York, Miami, Seattle. Predictions are relative to Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) and show the next 24–36 hours of high/low cycles.
