Lofoten Islands — Aurora Cam

The Lofoten Islands rise straight out of the Norwegian Sea above the Arctic Circle — jagged granite peaks dropping into turquoise fjords, with red fishermen's cabins clustered along the shore. This aurora camera captures one of the most photographed landscapes in the world under the northern lights. Because Lofoten sits right under the auroral oval yet is warmed by the Gulf Stream, you can watch the aurora dance over open water and snow-dusted summits without the brutal cold of the continental interior. Aurora season runs from September through mid-April. The islands' dramatic relief means the lights often appear to pour down between the peaks, and the still fjord water can mirror the whole display. Clear nights between 9 PM and 1 AM are best; watch the Kp index and the cloud forecast, which changes fast in this maritime climate. In the summer midnight-sun months the camera shows 24-hour daylight over the same peaks. Lofoten's villages — Reine, Hamnøy, Henningsvær — are bucket-list stops for photographers, climbers, and surfers (yes, Arctic surfing happens at Unstad). Cod fishing built these islands, and racks of drying stockfish are still part of the landscape every spring.
