Mount Rainier NP

This camera looks toward Mount Rainier, the 14,411-foot glacier-clad volcano at the heart of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington — the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States and an active (though currently quiet) volcano. On a clear day Rainier dominates the entire horizon; locals call a good day one where "the mountain is out." Rainier makes its own weather and is often wrapped in cloud even when the lowlands are clear, so catching the full peak is a treat. The clearest views tend to come in summer and early fall. Winter buries the park in some of the deepest snowpack on Earth — Paradise, on the south flank, has recorded over 90 feet in a single season. Washington is on Pacific Time, three hours behind Hawaii. The park is famous for its summer wildflower meadows at Paradise and Sunrise, old-growth forest, and the 93-mile Wonderland Trail that circles the peak. From much of the Puget Sound region — including Seattle and Tacoma — Rainier is the defining feature of the skyline.
