Mauna Loa — MKcam Mauna Kea View of Mauna Loa

Mauna Loa, Usgs

About This Camera

This USGS camera (MK) watches the area between Kīlauea's summit and the upper Northeast Rift Zone on Hawaii Island — the structural hinge where summit activity can propagate into the rift. The view takes in the volcanic terrain of fresh and weathered lava that records Kīlauea's long eruptive history. When magma moves into this part of the system, ground cracking, steaming, and incandescence can appear here first. Conditions vary with the trade winds and the 4,000-foot elevation. Operated by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park; Hawaii does not observe daylight saving.
