About This Camera
This camera looks out from Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska toward Turnagain Arm — the dramatic glacial fjord that branches off Cook Inlet south of Anchorage. The Arm is famous for some of the largest tidal ranges in North America (over 30 feet) and for its bore tide, a wall of water that rushes up the inlet on incoming tides. The Seward Highway threads along its shore beneath steep, avalanche-prone mountains.
The view changes with the tides and the seasons: mudflats and the bore tide at low water, a brimming fjord at high; snow-covered peaks in winter, green slopes and waterfalls in summer. Beluga whales follow the salmon and the bore tide up the Arm in season — Beluga Point is a well-known viewing spot. The aurora often reflects on the water on clear winter nights. Alaska is two hours behind Hawaii.
Turnagain Arm is one of the most scenic drives in Alaska, linking Anchorage to Girdwood, Alyeska, and onward to the Kenai Peninsula. Dall sheep, eagles, and the occasional avalanche are all part of the corridor.
