About Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park spans one million acres along the Continental Divide in northwest Montana. The park gets its name from the ancient glaciers that carved its dramatic U-shaped valleys, and from the remnant glaciers — now numbering fewer than 25, down from 150 in 1850 — that still cling to the high peaks.
Going-to-the-Sun Road, the 50-mile traverse across the park, is one of the most scenic drives in North America. It's typically open July through mid-September, depending on snowpack. The Apgar area on the western shore of Lake McDonald is the main visitor hub and the location of several of these webcams.
About Mt. Rainier National Park
Mt. Rainier is a 14,411-foot active stratovolcano southeast of Seattle, with more glacial ice than any other peak in the contiguous U.S. The Longmire area (elevation 2,761 ft) is the year-round gateway with historic buildings and meadows. The NPS webcams show the mountain from multiple angles — cloud-wrapping and clearing storms make for dramatic views.
Best times to watch
Both parks are at their clearest in July and August. Glacier's peak wildflower season is late July; fall color peaks in late September. Rainier has frequent cloud cover — mornings tend to be clearest before afternoon clouds build.
