About This Camera
This camera looks out from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, taking in the mile-deep gorge that the Colorado River has carved through nearly two billion years of rock. The South Rim, at about 7,000 feet, is the canyon's most popular vantage and is open year-round — the view sweeps across layered cliffs, side canyons, and the named buttes that rise from the canyon floor, all shifting color as the day's light moves across them.
The canyon rewards patient watching at the edges of the day: sunrise and sunset set the rock glowing in reds and oranges, while passing storms and clouds throw shadows across formations miles away. Winter can bring snow to the rim for a dramatic contrast with the warm-toned rock below. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, three hours ahead of Hawaii.
The South Rim holds Grand Canyon Village, historic lodges, and the classic overlooks — Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and the Rim Trail — plus the trailheads of the Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails that descend to the river. California condors, elk, and ravens are regular sights along the rim of one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
